How to mount a TV

Mounting a TV safely comes down to five decisions: how high, what the wall is made of, which bracket, where the studs are and how the cables will run. The guides below cover height, the common wall types, the Samsung Frame and what it all costs. If any step makes you uneasy, you can hire it done.

The steps, in order

Work through these in order, because each one limits the next. Stop and get help at the first step you are not comfortable with.

  • Decide the height. Center the screen at seated eye level, then adjust for the room. See the height guide.
  • Identify the wall. Drywall, plaster, brick, concrete and stone each need different fasteners. We have guides for drywall, plaster, brick and concrete walls.
  • Choose a bracket. Check that it is rated for your TV's size and weight and that its mounting holes match your TV. Fixed, tilting and full-motion brackets suit different rooms.
  • Find and confirm the studs. Mark them with a stud finder and verify before drilling.
  • Plan the cables. Decide whether cords will be covered on the wall, routed through the wall, or left, and check what is behind the wall before cutting.
  • Mount, level and test. Fasten the bracket, hang the TV, check it is level and secure, and try the tilt or swivel through its full range.
