Mounting a TV on plaster walls

You can mount a TV on a plaster wall, but not by treating it like drywall. Plaster is brittle and often sits over wood or metal lath, so the mount has to be fastened into the framing behind it, with careful pilot holes that avoid cracking the surface. If your plaster is old, crumbling or you cannot find the framing, this is a job worth hiring out.

What plaster walls are made of

Many older Twin Cities homes have plaster walls. Traditional plaster is built in layers over lath, which is a backing of narrow wood strips or metal mesh nailed to the studs. Some homes have plaster over rock lath, which is a gypsum board base. The finish is hard, but brittle.

That build changes how drilling behaves. Instead of a clean hole through a soft panel, plaster can chip, crack or crumble, and the keys that hold it to the lath can break loose around a hole. The strength is in the studs behind it, not in the plaster.

Why a stud finder is not always enough

Plaster is thicker and more uneven than drywall, and metal lath can confuse electronic stud finders. A reading that looks confident can be off, so confirm studs by a second method before mounting.

Plaster walls also often hide older wiring and uneven framing. Look at the room: where outlets and switches are, whether the wall feels solid when tapped, and whether there are existing cracks. Cracks and hollow-sounding areas are warning signs for where not to drill.

How a TV is anchored on plaster

The goal is to fasten the bracket into solid framing and keep the plaster from taking the load. The usual approach is to locate the studs, drill small pilot holes first through the plaster so it does not chip, and secure the bracket with fasteners long enough to pass through the plaster and lath and bite into the stud.

Drilling matters as much as hardware. Drill steadily rather than hammering, and stop and reassess if the bit hits something unexpected. Plaster dust is normal, so cover the floor and furniture below.

  • Find and confirm studs by more than one method.
  • Drill pilot holes carefully so the plaster does not crack or chip.
  • Use fasteners long enough to reach the stud, and a bracket rated for the TV.
  • Avoid cracked, loose or hollow-sounding areas of the wall.

What about anchors only?

Hollow-wall anchors in plaster are a gamble. Plaster is weaker around a hole than drywall is, and when it lets go the TV comes with it. If studs genuinely cannot be reached, get advice for that specific wall before relying on anchors for a TV.

Why hire it done on plaster

Plaster is unforgiving. A wrong drill location is a visible crack in a wall that is expensive to repair, and an anchor that does not hold risks the TV. Add in-wall cable routing through lath and plaster, and the job gets harder still.

Our St. Paul installation post describes a flush-mount TV on historic plaster, drilled into solid backing and away from void spaces. Our Edina post shows a Samsung Frame on textured plaster with in-wall cable concealment. If your home has plaster, this is the kind of wall we plan for.

Questions

FAQ

Still have a question? Give us a call. We're happy to help.

Can you mount a TV on a plaster wall?

Yes, by fastening the bracket into the studs behind the plaster with careful pilot holes. Plaster should not carry the load by itself.

What is lath and plaster?

Plaster applied over lath, which is narrow wood strips or metal mesh fastened to the studs. Some walls use gypsum rock lath instead. The finish is hard but brittle.

Why does plaster crack when you drill it?

Plaster is brittle and held to the lath by hardened keys of plaster. Drilling or hammering can break those keys and chip or crack the surface around the hole.

Do toggle anchors work in plaster?

They are unreliable for a TV, because plaster is weaker around a hole than drywall. Mount into studs where you can, and get advice for your wall if you cannot.

Does The Mounting Man mount TVs on plaster walls?

Yes. Our Twin Cities installation posts include TVs mounted on plaster, including a 55-inch flush mount in St. Paul and a 65-inch Samsung Frame in Edina.
