This Edina investment firm wanted a TV in their break room so employees could catch market updates, news, or just decompress during lunch. We mounted a 50" TV on the wall adjacent to their coffee station and kitchenette—the perfect spot for the team to gather.
The installation looks simple enough: TV on wall, clean and professional. But commercial buildings come with a challenge that most residential installers aren't prepared for: steel studs.
In residential construction, you're typically dealing with wood studs. Find the stud, drill a pilot hole, drive in a lag bolt, done. Wood studs provide solid holding power because the threads of the lag bolt bite into the wood fibers.
Commercial buildings are different. They use light-gauge steel studs—thin metal channels that standard lag bolts will spin right through. You can't just muscle your way through a steel stud installation like you might with wood.
The solution requires toggle bolts or specialized steel stud anchors rated for the weight you're hanging. For a 50" TV plus mount, you need anchors that can handle at least 100+ pounds with a safety margin. We use heavy-duty toggle bolts that spread the load across a wider area of the steel stud, preventing the thin metal from bending or the fastener from pulling through.
The other consideration in commercial spaces is cable management. This break room has a clean, professional aesthetic with the navy cabinetry, quartz countertops, and high-end coffee equipment. Visible wires would undermine that polish. We routed everything cleanly so the installation matches the corporate environment.
Edina isn't just beautiful residential neighborhoods—it's also a thriving business hub. The suburb hosts corporate headquarters, financial services firms, medical offices, and professional services companies throughout areas like Southdale, the Galleria, and various office parks along France Avenue and Highway 100.
These businesses expect the same quality in their commercial spaces that Edina residents expect in their homes. A break room TV might seem like a small detail, but it contributes to employee satisfaction and company culture. Getting it mounted properly—level, secure, with clean cable management—reflects the professionalism of the organization.
